Dewalt Dcf899 Review – 20V MAX XR High Torque Impact Wrench

DEWALT DCF899HB 20V MAX XR Brushless High Torque 1/2″ Impact Wrench with Hog Ring Anvil. The name might be a mouthful but this one is the best cordless impact wrench money can buy. Without further ado, let’s get on with the Dewalt Dcf899 Review.

This half inch high torque impact wrench is one of the newest and the most powerful tool in Dewalt’s 20v max line up. It’ll run off any of the 20-volt max batteries. So, whether that’s the high-capacity packs or even the compact packs they’re going to power it exactly the same way.

It has three different speed or power modes. So, if you’re dealing with smaller fasteners, you don’t have to worry about stripping them out or breaking them off.

If you are dealing with heavy-duty stuff, you can go to power mode 3 and put maximum torque through to the fastener. Trust me when I say this, this cordless tool will be your best friend.

Purchasing Options

Buy Either A kit or The Bare-tool. They have different options as far as purchasing this. If you are already part of the Dewalt 20-volt max lineup then you don’t need additional batteries or a charger.

You can buy the impact by itself as a bare tool. But, if you do pick it up as a kit, one of the options they have is two of the 5Ah high-capacity battery packs.

A dual voltage charger that will charge the 20-volt max batteries as well as the 12-volt max batteries and a protective tool bag.

Design Specification

When you first take a look at this tool, you’ll see that the entire yellow portion is made using very hard plastic.

The black portion that is extended all the way around the grip uses a soft rubber for comfort. They also have rubber bumpers built on the side.

The front of the nose cone is made out of metal. As far the dimension goes, you need to keep in mind that any half-inch cordless high torque impact ranch is not going to be a small tool.

From the front to the back, it’s coming in eight and three-quarter inches long. From the very top to the bottom of the high-capacity battery it’s just over ten and a half inches. It weighs in at 7.2 ounces.

Trigger Options

The trigger is going to be variable. What I mean is that it acts just like a drill depending on how hard you press in on it. It will make the motor run faster or slower applying more or less torque.

Just above the trigger, there is a black selector switch which you can move left to right. All the way in the left position, it will be in forward. All the way in the right position, it’s going to be in reverse.

Finally, in the middle position is actually going to be a trigger lock to prevent you from accidentally pressing it on it.

At the base of the grip, you can see a black selector switch which you can slide left to right. It’s going to click into place in front of one two or three.

  • One’s going to be a low torque or low-speed mode.
  • Two will be the mid torque.
  • Three is going to be high torque.

You can adjust this in forward or reverse. If you are dealing with a very small or delicate fastener, you do want to put that in speed or power mode one. That way you won’t damage anything.

If you’re dealing with very heavy-duty bolts, you can slide that over to max power which would be speed or power mode three.

At the base of the grip, just in front of the speed or power mode selector switch, you will notice an LED. This is going to light up anytime you’re using the impact wrench.

It’s going to illuminate what you’re working on. In a low light condition such as on the side of the road or an unlit garage, this will come in handy. It will light up once you put your hands on the trigger. It has a twenty-second delay.

Electric Brake

The motor does have an electric brake. Unlike pneumatic impact wrenches or even some cheaper cordless impact wrenches that will continue turning when you let off the trigger. The brake will stop the anvil from turning and it’s not going to spin the socket completely off.

Because it has three-speed settings, you can really fine tune that depending on what you’re working on. And, if you are dealing with smaller fasteners, keep that in power mode one you won’t accidentally damage anything.

If you are dealing with larger bolts, let say in a suspension, switching it over to speed mode three will put a lot more through to the fastener.

Spec-wise, it has a 700 ft./lbs. of max torque and 1,200 ft./lbs. of breakaway torque. Now, this isn’t the exact working torque, but it’s pretty close.

For tightening, which is the forward setting, the tested max torque values for mode 1, 2 and 3 are 150, 400, and 900. And for breaking bolts, which is the reverse settings are 200, 440, and 1,025.

This particular model comes with Hog Ring Anvil aka friction ring. Which means installing and removing sockets is very easy to do. It doesn’t require any additional tools.

They do have an additional version looks almost exactly like this, but the anvil is going to be different.

It’s known as a pin detent version. that’s going to be best for the construction trades. You need to physically press that pin in to install or remove a socket.

If you are working in a garage, the friction ring is definitely going to be the way that you want to go.

You certainly don’t have to worry about the durability of this tool. It’s made using top of the line quality materials and can survive a 6ft drop.
