Choosing and checking angle-grinder discs

First match the accessory to the operation and material. Then verify every independent gate: diameter, bore or mounting interface, disc speed marking, grinder no-load RPM, guard, condition and manufacturer-stated cutting depth. A cutting wheel is not a grinding wheel, and a formula cannot override its markings.

Scope. This guide organises data checks for cutting, grinding and polishing accessories. It does not train a person to use an angle grinder, choose an accessory by brand or approve a machine/accessory combination.

Match the disc to the operation and material

State the job as an action on a material: cut mild-steel section, grind a weld, remove masonry mortar, or polish a painted surface. “Use a grinder” is not enough. Cutting, grinding and polishing put different loads on an accessory and require accessories expressly marked or documented for that operation.

A thin bonded cutting wheel is designed primarily for radial cutting. Side-loading it for grinding can damage the wheel. A grinding wheel is made for the relevant grinding action but is not automatically a cutting accessory. Polishing uses a backing pad, mop or other system whose speed, interface and guard requirements must match both the grinder and manufacturer instructions. Material matters as much as operation. Ferrous metal, stainless steel, aluminium, stone, concrete, tile, paint and timber can require different accessory construction and restrictions. Do not infer a material from colour or appearance; read the label and documentation.

Define the finish and geometry too. A straight separation cut, edge bevel, weld dressing and broad surface preparation are different contacts. The required reach and access must not force the wheel onto a face the manufacturer excludes.

Read the disc markings

Before fitting, record the manufacturer/product identification, intended operation, permitted materials, nominal diameter, thickness, bore or mounting interface, maximum revolutions per minute (RPM), maximum peripheral speed where marked, restrictions and expiry/use-by information where applicable.

Markings must be legible and traceable to the accessory. An unmarked loose disc does not gain an identity from the box beside it. Check for chips, cracks, distortion, contamination, water/chemical exposure or storage damage. HSG17 provides guidance on inspection, handling and storage of abrasive wheels. [HSE]

Keep the label or batch information with the job record where the task is planned in advance. If an expiry date applies, compare the work date, not merely the purchase date. Store accessories so they are not bent, damp, struck or mixed with visually similar discs.

PUWER requires work equipment to be appropriate for its use and maintained, inspected and used with appropriate information and training. Those are legal duties around the work equipment; they are not reduced to one RPM comparison. [LAW]

Match the machine and guard

Read the actual grinder plate/manual for maximum accessory diameter, no-load RPM, spindle/thread/interface and permitted accessory types. Record the guard required for the operation and confirm it is present, correctly fitted and compatible with the accessory. Do not remove a guard to gain diameter or depth.

Check flanges, locking parts and backing pads against the manufacturer instructions. A bore that can be forced onto a spindle, or an improvised reducer, is not a match. Threaded and quick-change systems must be the exact stated interface, not merely similar in measured diameter.

One Bosch model page provides manufacturer-specific data such as permitted diameter, no-load speed and application features. Such a page can support an example tied to that model only; it is not a general threshold for other grinders. [MFR]

Isolation during fitting, correct tightening and a clear test-run position also belong in the manufacturer’s sequence. A disc that mounts physically but cannot seat against the specified flange is a failed interface, not a workshop adjustment problem.

RPM and peripheral-speed gates

The disc’s marked maximum RPM must be at least the grinder’s maximum/no-load RPM. Compare the marked numbers directly. Do not use the expected loaded speed, a variable-speed setting or the usual way the tool is operated to weaken this gate.

Peripheral speed can be calculated as v = πDN ÷ 60, where D is nominal disc diameter in metres, N is RPM and v is metres per second. [ARITH] It is a cross-check and record; it cannot raise a disc’s marked limit or compensate for a failed RPM gate.

Keep diameter, RPM and marked m/s as independent checks. A smaller worn diameter may lower current rim speed, but selection uses the accessory’s identity and markings, not an argument based on wear. Comparisons use unrounded values even where the display shows two decimals.

Use manufacturer-stated cut depth

Disc radius is not usable cutting depth. The spindle, flanges, guard, gearbox and the manufacturer’s permitted geometry reduce depth. Use a manufacturer-stated maximum cutting depth for the exact grinder/accessory arrangement.

If the job requires 35 mm and the verified maximum is 33 mm, the depth gate fails. Do not plan to twist the wheel, remove the guard, fit an oversized disc or assume that approaching from both sides resolves alignment, breakthrough and control questions. A different work method needs its own assessment.

The accessory’s instructions govern the working face, pressure, angle and permitted operation. Avoid “multi-purpose” as a conclusion unless the manufacturer explicitly lists the exact operations and material.

Polishing especially needs a speed-range check because some backing pads, foams and mops are intended for much lower speeds than a grinder can produce. Variable speed does not help if the machine’s documented range, accessory rating or control method remains mismatched. Record the chosen setting and the accessory maximum without treating the dial marking as calibrated RPM.

Reduce kickback and loss of control

Plan the line of cut and support the work so the kerf does not close and bind the wheel. Secure the workpiece, keep the body out of the likely path, establish two-hand control where the machine is designed for it, and avoid twisting in the cut. Follow the grinder and accessory instructions for direction, start position and run-down.

Do not copy circular-saw kickback claims into a grinder method. The applicable controls come from the actual grinder/accessory documentation, the workpiece support and the task assessment. Stop after a jam, drop or abnormal vibration and inspect according to instructions rather than restarting immediately.

Route sparks, fragments and hot swarf away from people, cables, glazing and combustible material. Check the workpiece for coatings or residues that alter the dust, fume or fire controls. These hazards do not disappear when every compatibility gate passes.

Fatigue, restricted posture and overhead work can weaken control. Change access or method rather than accepting one-handed use or a position where run-down brings the accessory across the body.

Keep that access decision with the disc record.

Material controls remain separate. Cutting masonry or coated material can need extraction/water and a specialist-hazard check; use the dust-control workflow before disc selection becomes the focus.

Block the combination when data or condition is wrong

No compatibility result when:

  • the disc marking, identity, condition or expiry status cannot be established;
  • operation or material is outside the manufacturer’s stated use;
  • diameter, direct RPM, marked m/s, bore/interface or guard gate fails;
  • manufacturer maximum depth is absent or below the required depth;
  • the disc is damaged, contaminated, distorted or has been stored contrary to instructions;
  • the planned method depends on side-loading a cutting wheel or removing a guard.
